MURTAGH FAMILY TREE (1820s-2017)

 
 


I have been able to trace my Murtagh ancestry back to the 1820's.  Within different generations, Murtagh's have joined with Harrington's, Bradley's and Taaffe's over the course of nearly two centuries creating my parents, grandparents, great grandparents and great, great grandparents.

First Generation  
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. William MURTAGH, was born in 1829 in Co. Meath.  He worked as a Farmer. He married Margaret TAAFFE on Thursday, 2 February 1865 (Rootsireland / Church record) in Kells, Co. Meath. The witnesses were Cornelius Leonard and Kate Mulvaney.  William Murtagh  died on Friday, 17 May 1895 in 2 Grattan Street, Dublin at 66 years of age (Vol. 2, page 618, Apr-Jun, Dublin South).  William was buried on Sunday, 19 May 1895 in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin (Garden - KG41) with his daughter (Mary Anne) and his son (James).


Margaret TAAFFE, daughter of Nicholas TAAFFE (1817-1882) and Mary MEIGHAN (  -  ), was born in 1841 in Co. Meath. She was baptised on Monday, 1 March 1841 in Kells (Rootsireland / 
). The Godparents were Hugh Sheridan and Catherine Lynch. According to 1901 census (31 March), Margaret Murtagh was 60 years of age and lived in No 2 Grattan Street, Dublin (a Tenement House). Her son Nicholas was residing in No 2 with her. According to 1911 census (2 April), Margaret was 70 years of age and living on her own in No 2, Grattan Street. The census also records that Margaret and William Murtagh had 6 children of which 3 were living in 1911. Records show them as Thomas, Nicholas and James. Margaret Murtagh died on Thursday, 6 April 1916 in Dublin at 73 years of age (Vol. 2, page 508, Apr-Jun, Dublin South).  Margaret was buried on Sunday, 9 April 1916 in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin () (St Paul's - SB51) with her son (Thomas). 


William MURTAGH and Margaret TAAFFE had the following children:

Second Generation

1. Thomas MURTAGH, son of William MURTAGH (1829-1895) and Margaret TAAFFE (1841-1916), was born on Friday, 19 July 1867 (Vol. 12, page 824, Kells) in Chamberlands Town, Co. Meath.  He was baptised ( / ) on Sunday,  21 July 1867 in Kells, Co. Meath. The godparents were James Mulvaney and Anne Taaffe.  Thomas worked as a Shop Assistant in Leverett and Frye, 36 Grafton Street, Dublin.  He married Sarah T BRADLEY on Monday, 6 September 1897 in , Dublin. The witnesses were Nicholas Murtagh and Lizzy Clancy. The celebrant was Rev. Eugene MacCarthy (Vol. 2, page 664, Dublin South). In the Dublin Electoral lists (1908-1915) Murtagh was living in 13 Leo Street, Dublin in 1908 and in 10 Leo Street in 1909, 1910 and 1911. According to 1901 census (31 March) Thomas was 31 years of age and living in 71 Dame Street, Dublin (beside the Empire Place Theatre (now Olympia Theatre) and above a shop). Living in the same building was Catherine Bradley, his mother-in-law aged 50 years of age. Thomas Murtagh's appears on the 1908 Electoral Register and living in 13 Leo Avenue, Dublin. According to 1911 census (2 April), Thomas was 42 years of age and living in the two roomed flat in 2 Gratton Street, Dublin, the same building where his mother (Margaret Murtagh) was living.  He died on Wednesday, 11 June 1913 (Vol. 2, page 518, Apr-Jun, South Dublin) in The Hospice, Harold's Cross, Dublin aged 45 years and was buried on Friday, 13 June 1913 in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin ((St Paul's - SB51).


Sarah T BRADLEY, daughter of Thomas BRADLEY (1843-1890) and Catherine TALBOT (1837-1872), was born on Thursday, 16 January 1868 
She was baptised on 20 January 1868 in St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, Dublin. The godparent was Maria Reilly. She lived in 5 Chapel,Lane Dublin.  According to the Family Bible, Sarah had 1 brother (John Joseph Bradley b. 26 Aug 1866 and d. 13 Nov 1891) and one sister (Mary Bradley b. 11 Sep 1871). According to the 1901 census (31 March), Sarah was 30 years of age and living in 71 Dames Street, Dublin (beside the Empire Place Theatre (now the Olympia Theatre) and above a shop). Living in the same building was Catherine Bradley, her step-mother, who was 50 years of age. According to 1911 census (2 April), Sarah was 43 years of age and living in the two roomed flat in 2 Gratton Street, Dublin, the same building where his mother-in-law (Margaret Murtagh) was living. In the Dublin Electoral lists (1908-1915) Sarah T Murtagh was living in 2 Gratton Street, Dublin in 1914 and 1915. According to Thom's Directory in 1933, Sarah T Murtagh became the registered owner of 27 Emorville Avenue, South Circular Road, Dublin. (Sarah's step-mother, Catherine Bradley was the owner of the house from 1925 until her death in 1930). Sarah lived in 27 Emorville Avenue with her daughter (Mary) and son (Thomas) until her death.  Sarah was on Electoral Register in 1927 and the Electoral Register 1339-1940 shows Sarah T, Mary J, and Thomas G living in 27 Emorville Avenue, Dublin. Sarah died on Monday, 18 January 1954 (Vol. 2, page 419, Jan-Mar, Dublin South) in Dublin at 68 years of age (paper) and was buried on Wednesday, 20 January 1954 in Glasnevin Cemetery (St. Brigid's - JH205.5) with her father and step mother (Thomas & Catherine Bradley) and her brother (John Joseph) - memorial card


Thomas MURTAGH and Sarah T BRADLEY had the following children:

2. Nicholas Joseph MURTAGH, son of William MURTAGH (1829-1895) and Margaret TAAFFE (1841-1916), was born on Tuesday, 23 March 1869 
(Vol. 2, page 935, Kells) in Chamberlands Town. He was baptised on Thursday, 25 March 1869 in the Parish of Kells. The godparents were Peter Taaffe and Kate Mulvaney. According to 1901 census (31 March), Nicholas was 30 years of age and living in 2 Gratton Street, Dublin with his mother (Margaret).  The census records his occupation was a Clock Maker.  According to 1911 census of England, Wales and Scotland, Nicholas was 42 years of age and living in London, working as an Insurance Cleck and living in 41 Kinnerton, St Motcomb Street, Knightsbridge, SW (Archive Reference RG14, Piece Number 432).  He died in 24 October 1925 (Vol 2, page 366, Oct-Dec, Dublin Northaged 56 years in Dublin.


3. Mary Anne MURTAGH, daughter of William MURTAGH 
(1829-1895) and Margaret TAAFFE (1841-1916), was born on Sunday, 1 January 1871 (Vol. 2, page 957, Kells) in Chamberlands Town. She was baptised on Friday, 6 January 1871 in the Parish of Kells. The witnesses were Patrick Taaffe and Bridget Taaffe.  Mary Anne Murtagh died on Thursday, 17 May 1888 in 18 Orchard Cottages, North Strand, Dublin (Apr-Jun, Vol. 2, page 593, Dublin North) Dublin at 16 years of age and was buried on Saturday, 19 May 1888 in Glasnevin Cemetery (Garden KG41).


4. Bernard Charles MURTAGH, son of William MURTAGH 
(1829-1895) and Margaret TAAFFE (1841-1916), was born on Monday, 4 November 1872 in Chamberlands Town (Vol. 17, page 806, Kells). Bernard was baptised on Tuesday, 5 November 1872 in the Parish of Kells. The godparents were James Taaffe and Catherine Taaffe.

5. Alicia MURTAGH, daughter of William MURTAGH 
(1829-1895) and Margaret TAAFFE (1841-1916), was born on Sunday, 16 August 1874 (Vol. 12, page 851, Kells). Alicia was baptised on Wednesday, 19 August 1874 in Girley, County Meath. The godparents were Thomas Kelly and Margaret Bellew. She married Thomas FARRELL on Sunday, 31 January 1897 (Vol 2, page 729, Jan-Mar, Dublin South) in St Andrews Church, Westland Row, Dublin. The witnesses were John W and Sarah Bradley. The celebrant was Rev. T Brogan. Alicia Farrell died on Friday, 14 September 1900 (Vol. 2, page 525, Jul-Sep, Dublin South) in 2 Grattan Street, Dublin (paper) at 26 years of age and was buried on Sunday, 16 September 1900 in Glasnevin Cemetery (St. Brigid's - MI276.5). 


6. James MURTAGH, son of William MURTAGH 
(1829-1895) and Margaret TAAFFE (1841-1916), was born on Sunday, 16 September 1876. (Vol. 12, page 821, Kells). James was baptised on Monday, 17 September 1876 in Girley. The godparents were Nicholas Taaffe and Kate Fagan. James Murtagh died on Sunday, 16 September 1894 (Jul-Sep, Vol. 2, page 499, Dublin South) in 2 Grattan Street, Dublin at 17 years of age and was buried on Wednesday, 19 September 1894 in Glasnevin Cemetery withe his sister Mary Anne (Garden KG41).

Third Generation

1. Margaret Mary MURTAGH, daughter of Thomas MURTAGH (1867-1913) and Sarah T BRADLEY (1868-1954), was born on Tuesday, 18 April 1899 (Vol. 2, page 661, Apr-Jun, Dublin South) in 71 Dames Street, Dublin. Margaret died on Sunday, 25 March 1900 in Dublin aged 11 months. She was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin 
(St. Brigid's - JH205.5) with her grandfather (Thomas Bradley).

2. Mary Josephine MURTAGH, daughter of Thomas MURTAGH (1867-1913) and Sarah T BRADLEY (1868-1954), was born on Saturday, 
13 July 1901 (Vol. 2, page 615, Jul - Sep, Dublin South) in 71 Dames Street, Dublin.  According to  1911 census (2 April), Mary was 9 years of age and living in 2 Grattan Street, Dublin. Later, Mary lived in 27 Emorville Avenue, South Circular Road, Dublin.  According to the Electoral Register 1939-40, it shows Sarah T, Mary J, and Thomas G. as living in 27 Emorville Avenue  Dublin. According to the Electoral Register, Mary was registered from 1955 as living in 30 Curzon Street, South Circular Road, Dublin, a house owned by Bridie Opielinski.  Mary died on Saturday, 27 September 1975 (paper) in 33 Marguerite Road, Glasnevin, Dublin aged 74 years. She was buried on Tuesday, 30 September 1975 in Glasnevin Cemetery (St. Brigid's - JH205.5) with her mother (Sarah) and grandparents (Thomas & Catherine Bradley).


3. Bernard Leo MURTAGH, son of Thomas MURTAGH (1867-1913) and Sarah T BRADLEY (1868-1954), was born on Friday, 4 September 1903 
(Vol. 2, page 609, Jul-Sep, Dublin South) in 71 Dames Street, Dublin. According to  1911 census (2 April), Bernard was 7 years of age and living in 2 Grattan Street, Dublin. Bernard married Elizabeth O'HARA in  Friday, 12 June 1936 in St Paul's Church, Arran Quay, Dublin (Vol. 2, page 326, Apr-Jun, Dublin North). The witnesses were Thomas Murtagh and Mary Meehan.  The celebrant was Rev. J.J. Flood P.P.  They lived in 168 Pembroke Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin and later in 33 Marguerite Road, Glasnevin, Dublin. Both Bernard and Elizabeth Eileen appeared in 1939-40 and 1940-41 on the Elector Register as living at 168 Pembroke Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin. They appear on the Electoral Register in 33 Marguerite Road, Glasnevin, Dublin in 1941-42, 1942-43, 1943-44,1944-45, 1949-50, 1950-51, 1954-55, 1955-56, 1956-7. The 1962-63 Electoral Register listed Bernard, Elizabeth and Evelyn.  Bernard died on Sunday, 23 January 1983 (paper) in James Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, Dublin aged 79 years. He was buried on Tuesday, 25 January 1983 in Glasnevin Cemetery (St Brigid's - Si211).


Elizabeth Agnes O'HARA, daughter of Thomas O'HARA and Emily MEEHAN, was born on Saturday, 20 January 1906.  According to 1911 census (2 April), Elizabeth was 5 years of age and living in 22 Grangegorman, Upper (Arran Quay), Dublin.  Elizabeth died on Sunday, 5 August 1984 
(paperin James Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, Dublin. She was buried on Wednesday, 8 August 1984 in Glasnevin Cemetery (St Brigid's - Si211) with her husband (Bernard).


Bernard Leo MURTAGH and Elizabeth O'Hara had the following children:

    1. Thomas Anthony MURTAGH (1937-1937)
    2. Evelyn P MURTAGH (Living)
    3. Brendan A MURTAGH (Living)

4. John Joseph MURTAGH, son of Thomas MURTAGH (1867-1913) and Sarah T BRADLEY (1868-1954), was born on Tuesday, 19 September 1905 
(Vol. 2, page 408, Oct-Dec, Dublin North) in 48 Drumcondra Road, Dublin. According to  1911 census (2 April), John was 5 years of age and living in 2 Grattan Street, Dublin. John married Rebecca LADLEY on  Tuesday, 26 November 1935 in St Audoen's Church, Dublin (Vol. 2, page 475, Oct-Dec, Dublin South). The witnesses were George Ladley and Mary Murtagh.  The celebrant was Rev. Thomas J. Fallon.  According to the Electoral Register 1949-51, John and Rebecca Murtagh were living in 27 Charleston Road, Kimmage, Dublin. The 1955-56, 1956-57 and 1962-63 Electoral Registers show them living in 42 Chelmsford Road, Ranelagh, Dublin. John died on Monday, 28 May 1962 (paperin James Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, Dublin aged 56 years. He was buried on Wednesday, 30 May 1962 in Deansgrange Cemetery - memorial card.


Rebecca LADLEY, daughter of William LADLEY and Susan Ormiston (1878-1910) was born in Saturday, 23 January 1904 in Hollis Street Hospital (Vol. 2, page 697, Jan-Mar, Dublin South) and living in 87 Morehampton Road.  According to 1911 census (2 April), Rebecca was 7 years of age and living in 21.3 Donnybrook Road, Dublin.  Rebecca died on Wednesday, 16 August 1995 
(paper) in the Meath Hospital, Dublin at 91 years of age. She was buried on Friday, 18 August 1995 in Deansgrange Cemetery with his husband (John Joseph).


5. Thomas Gerard MURTAGH, son of Thomas MURTAGH (1867-1913) and Sarah T BRADLEY (1868-1954), was born on Monday, 11 January 1909 
(Vol. 2, page 463, Jan-Mar, Dublin North) in 10 Leo Street, Dublin.   According to  1911 census (2 April), Thomas was 2 years of age and living in 2 Grattan Street, Dublin. Thomas attended St Andrews Primary School and later CBS Westland Row. Thomas worked in Boland's Bakery for more than 50 years until his retirement in 1974. According to the Electoral Register 1939-40, it shows Sarah T, Mary J, and Thomas G as living in 27 Emorville Avenue, South Circular Road, Dublin. Thomas married Mary Carmel HARRINGTON on Monday, 12 July 1948 (Vol. 2, page 929, Jul-Sep, Dublin South) in St. Michael's Church, Inchicore, Dublin. The witnesses were John Joseph Murtagh and Eithne Harrington. The celebrant was Rev Bernard Brady. They lived in 27 Emorville Avenue  South Circular Road, Dublin and from 1954 in 31 Gledswood Park, Clonskeagh, Dublin. Thomas died on Monday, 4 May 1981 in Baggot Street Hospital, Dublin aged 72 years.  He was buried on Thursday, 7 May 1981 in Deansgrange Cemetery (St Paul's) - memorial card.


Mary Carmel HARRINGTON, daughter of Daniel HARRINGTON (1885-1944) and Mary Ellen BYRNE (1882-1951), was born on Friday, 18 July 1913 
(Vol. 2, Page 371, Jul-Sep, Celbridge) in Sarsfield Terrace, Lucan, Co. Dublin. Carmel was baptised on Sunday, 20 July 1913 in St. Mary's Church, Lucan, Co. Dublin. The godparents were Thomas Donnelly and Alice Byrne. The celebrant was Rev William Hanley. She lived in 11 Sarsfield Terrace, Lucan and sometime after 1916 the family moved to 50 Ring Street, Inchicore, Dublin.  She was on the Electoral Register 1939-1940. Carmel died on Wednesday, 27 August 2003 (paperin Clonskeagh Hospital, Dublin at 90 years of age and was buried on Saturday, 30 August 2003 in Deansgrange Cemetery (St Paul'swith her husband (Thomas) - memorial card

1. Thomas Anthony MURTAGH, son of Bernard Leo MURTAGH (1903-1983) and Elizabeth O'HARA (1906-1984), was born on Tuesday, 18 May 1937 in Dublin
 (Apr-Jun, Vol. 2, page 245, Dublin North). He died on Thursday, 20 May 1937 at 2 days of age (Apr-Jun, Vol. 2, page 249, Dublin North). He was buried on Friday, 21 May 1937 in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin (St. Brigid's - JH205.5) with his grandparents (Thomas and Catherine Bradley).


2. Evelyn P MURTAGH, daughter of Bernard Leo MURTAGH (1903-1983) and Elizabeth O'HARA (1906-1984), was born in (Living) in Dublin. According to the Electoral Register of 1962-63, Bernard, Elizabeth and Evelyn were listed. Evelyn married Sean THOMPSON in (Living).

Sean THOMPSON and Evelyn MURTAGH had the following children:

3. Brendan A MURTAGH, son of Bernard Leo MURTAGH (1903-1983) and Elizabeth O'HARA (1906-1984), was born in (Living) in Dublin. Brendan married Rita GRIFFIN.

4. Gerard Patrick MURTAGH, son of Thomas Gerard MURTAGH (1909-1981) and Mary Carmel HARRINGTON (1913-2003), was born on (Living) in Dublin. Gerard lived in 27 Emorville Avenue, South Circular Road, Dublin and from May 1954 in Gledswood Park, Clonskeagh, Dublin. Gerard married Maria DRUMMY on (Living) in London.

Maria DRUMMY, daughter of Sean DRUMMY (   -1992) and Sheila MYTHEN (1932 -  ), was born on (Living) in London.

5. Desmond Anthony MURTAGH, son of Thomas Gerard MURTAGH (1909-1981) and Mary Carmel HARRINGTON (1913-2003), was born on (Living) in Dublin.  Desmond was baptised on (Living) in Church of Our Lady of Fatima, Rialto, Dublin. The godparents were Daniel Harrington and Monica Goulding. Desmond lived in 27 Emorville Avenue, South Circular Road, Dublin and from May 1954 in Gledswood Park, Clonskeagh, Dublin. He attended school at CBS Westland Row, Dublin. Desmond married Marian FARRY on (Living) in Co Kildare.

Marian FARRY, daughter of Thomas FARRY (1917-1991) and Bridget HARRINGTON (1923-1990), was born on (Living) in Coolaney, Sligo.

Marian Farry had the following child:

6. Aidan Thomas MURTAGH, son of Thomas Gerard MURTAGH (1909-1981) and Mary Carmel HARRINGTON (1913-2003), was born on (Living) in Dublin. Aidan lived in Gledswood Park, Clonskeagh, Dublin. He attended school at CBS Westland Row, Dublin. Aidan married Muireann LAWLOR on (Living) in Mount Argus Church, Dublin. The witnesses were Gerard Murtagh and Eilis Lawlor.

Muireann LAWLOR, daughter of Michael LAWLOR ( -1984) and Mary SHEEHAN (1922-2007), was born on (Living) in Dublin.  

Aidan Thomas MURTAGH and Muireann LAWLOR had the following children:
